BI Nutraceutical Hosting Its First Functional Application Seminar

LONG BEACH, CA, February 15, 2012 — BI Nutraceuticals will be hosting its first Functional Application Seminar. Enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and participate in a unique Functional Application Seminar that will take place on Thursday March 8, 2012 from 3:00pm – 5:00pm in the Salinas Room of the Hilton Anaheim, located right next to the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Functional Application Seminar, conveniently scheduled the day before Natural Products Expo West, will feature Alison Raban, BI’s Food Technologist. She will be showcasing a wonderful combination of food and beverage prototypes. Ms. Raban will also be sharing tips on how to enhance product functionality.

The functional food portion will feature the history, exciting applications and tasting of Chia and Quinoa. Chia seeds deliver the highest levels of total omega-3 fatty acids by weight of any common foods; a complete vegan source of protein; more fiber than common grains; no gluten or cholesterol; and a comprehensive range of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential amino acids.

Quinoa is available in whole seed or powder form for use in breads, pastas, and cereals. Quinoa contains 18 percent protein, which is significantly higher than other grains including oat, corn and rice. It is also a “complete” vegetarian source of protein delivering all 8 essential amino acids, a unique advantage when compared to other vegetarian protein sources. Additionally, Quinoa is completely gluten-free and nutrient dense, making it an excellent option for use in gluten-free foods, as they can sometimes be limited in nutritional quality. Finally, Quinoa’s high fiber, iron and folate content make it especially valuable for consumers needing extra nutrition such as children, pregnant women and the elderly.

Baobab and Yerba Mate will be featured during the functional beverage part of the seminar. Baobab fruit powder, which has GRAS approval in the United States and EU novel food ingredient status, boasts a strong antioxidant profile; a complete source of vitamin C, calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc to help support the immune system, promote healthy bones and teeth and maintain cardiovascular health including normal blood pressure levels; high levels of soluble fibers with prebiotic-like activity to promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut; a great natural source of micronutrients; and natural preservative properties due to high potassium and phosphorus content.

Yerba Mate powder is versatile and can be prepared in a variety of ways. The Yerba Mate leaf naturally contains twenty-four vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids and a variety of antioxidants. Naturally caffeinated, Yerba Mate, delivers both energy and nutrition for your functional beverage products.
